A juniper tree greets the Milky Way galaxy in Utah's Canyonlands National Park.
This photo was taken while backpacking in the elephant canyon section of the park. Our tent was right next to this beautiful tree.
Juniper trees are amazingly resilient: their roots can go down 25 feet into the ground in search of water. They live as long as a thousand years but they don't grow taller than about 30 feet. This juniper - like so many other juniper trees in Canyonlands - looks like it's growing straight out of the rocks.
