Description
A foggy morning along the damnation creek trail in the Redwoods National Park.
Redwoods are the tallest trees in the world - that's it. No competition. They can grow to be as tall as 367 feet. To go with their awe-inspiring size, there's some fun history too: just over 160 million years ago (how many facebook posts ago is that?), dinosaurs used to teem in the place where there are now the redwood giants. It's nice that one iconic species has been replaced by another. Redwoods have been in this part of northern California for over 20 million years.
A hike along the damnation creek trail (located in the del norte state park, near Crescent city) is like a trip through time and magic: fog shrouds these giants as you walk silently along the trail with the sound of rain dripping from the sky. It is an unbelievable experience - one that you have to actually be present to grasp. This photo is probably a good close substitute to being there.
