Desert Gold wildflowers adorn the landscape in Death Valley National Park on a blistery late winter afternoon. This photo was taken in late February with a thunderstorm looming in the distance. Around this time of the year, it can be quite windy here, as was the case this day. The wind, thunder, open spaces and the bright yellow wildflowers are what make Death Valley National Park a special place - it is where the delicate, the tender, the vast and the grand can all be found together.
While the 2018 wildflower season might not qualify as a "superbloom", it is still a sight to behold. Superblooms are rare - once every decade or so, with the last one being in 2016. It takes a lot for a superbloom to come together - right amount of rainfall in winter, lack of drying winds and a generous dose of warmth - but when it does, it is amazing to behold the desert floor completely carpeted with stretches of yellow.
