Artist's Description

Desert Gold wildflowers adorn the landscape in Death Valley National Park on a blistery late winter afternoon. This photo was taken in late February with a thunderstorm looming in the distance. Around this time of the year, it can be quite windy here, as was the case this day. The wind, thunder, open spaces and the bright yellow wildflowers are what make Death Valley National Park a special place - it is where the delicate, the tender, the vast and the grand can all be found together.

While the 2018 wildflower season might not qualify as a "superbloom", it is still a sight to behold. Superblooms are rare - once every decade or so, with the last one being in 2016. It takes a lot for a superbloom to come together - right amount of rainfall in winter, lack of drying winds and a generous dose of warmth - but when it does, it is amazing to behold the desert floor completely carpeted with stretches of yellow.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you enjoy what you find. I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest region of the USA and am grateful for all this place offers, photographically and otherwise. My award-winning photographs have been featured as one of 25 finalists in Outdoor Photographer's American Landscape 2013 landscape contest and have been printed in publications like The Sun Magazine, Southwest Airlines' inflight magazine and the Portland Japanese Garden's 2015 calendar. Photography for me is a way to connect closely with what's around me. Whether that's observing the subtle shifts in light on a mossy log over the course of a minute or observing how the sun lights up different parts of a tree over the course of a year, I...
