Description
A blistery winter afternoon along the salt creek boardwalk in Death Valley National Park. Lining the trail is pickleweed, a native bush in this region. We took a guided ranger tour on this trail and she offered a few leaves of the pickleweed for tasting, while reminding guests that they normally shouldn't be plucking leaves. It tasted tangy and salty, which makes sense given that these bushes live near salt creek.
Salt creek is also home to the amazing pupfish - native fishes that are endemic to death valley national park. In fact, the salt creek pupfish is found nowhere but here. It can survive extreme temperatures that exist in this park, ranging from over 110 degrees to as low as freezing. All of this in a fish that's no bigger than a couple of inches.
