Description
The hidden valley loop in Joshua Tree National Park is a great example of a diverse desert habitat: it has juniper, oak, pinyon, mesquite and of course, Joshua trees. For a popular trail, it was surprisingly quiet on this September evening when this photo was taken. It makes for a great evening hike in Joshua Tree national park - there's even a campground almost right next to it.
The hidden valley loop has an interesting history too, as the interpretive park sign will tell you when you start the hike: believe it or not, cows used to graze here, at one point. Bill Keys blasted a hole through the rocks so the cows he owned could venture out here.
I spent a good few minutes enjoying the serenity and solitude near this tree - it's easy to lose track of time as you spend time pondering over how much time has passed since this tree was once alive. After all, Joshua trees can live for as long as 500 years.
