Fall colors are a joy to view anywhere, but especially in the southwest - this photo was taken in Utah - the aspens really take on spectacular hues.
What's interesting is that the yellow colors are already present in the leaves; it's just that they're masked out by the green of chlorophyll. In late summer, as the amount of sunshine starts to dwindle, the trees automatically start to turn off the flow of nutrients to the leaves, leading the chlorophyll levels to drop and the deciduous tree starts showing its 'true' colors: yellows, reds, oranges, purples, blues, magentas...
