Description
Cherry blossoms have long been associated with the concept of transience or the ephemeral nature of life - they rise from the earth for a few precious days and then return to it later, only to repeat the cycle next year. The symbolism of cherry blossoms has long since been revered in cultures all across the world, especially in countries like Japan where there are elaborate rituals, festivals and events planned to coincide with the blossoming of these lovely flowers.
Several Japanese haikus are also themed around the concept of spring and blossoms. One of my favorite haikus is this one by Matsuo Basho:
How many many things
They call to mind
These cherry blossoms!
This photo called to mind at-least the return of spring and the end of another Portland winter.
